I’m Gerred Gilronan, a documentary photographer based in Stansted Mountfitchet, near Bishop’s Stortford, and working across Hertfordshire, Essex and beyond.
I grew up in a working-class Irish family in Birmingham. One day I left Birmingham and went to London to see The Clash and never really went home. Punk arrived at exactly the right moment for me. It wasn’t just the music; it was the idea that you didn’t need permission, polish or the approval of the right people to make something that mattered.
Although I now live in Essex, I think that background has stayed with me. It shaped my interest in ordinary lives and my belief that everybody has a story worth taking seriously.
My photography is about people, work and place. I’m interested in how people live, what they make, the communities they create and the small moments that reveal something of who they are.
I photograph quietly and without imposing too much on what is happening. That might mean spending time with a designer in her studio, following the life of a local festival, making a portrait of somebody who contributes to their community, or covering an assignment for the Bishop’s Stortford Independent.
I look for gestures, relationships, atmosphere and the details that might otherwise pass unnoticed.
My work includes documentary stories, environmental portraits, editorial assignments and photography for independent businesses and community organisations.
Whatever I’m photographing, the approach remains the same: spend time, pay attention and make honest pictures that have a sense of life beyond the frame.
